Deafness Becomes Me' is the latest down-tempo treat from folktronic
trio Chin Chin. Consisting of Frankie Binns, Theresa Connelly (TC)
and Chris Cousin, the gifted threesome share a love for acoustic
instruments, found sounds and electronic nuances. Following the
release of their debut album 'Shallow Dive' in 2005, the group have
attracted a wealth of new listeners the world over with their distinctive,
laid back sound.
Listening time.
"Deafness becomes me" creeps into your newly refurbished
vault and sprinkles a crunchy floor covering of seamless patterns
and rhythmic goodness that you can't not be drawn to. The silent
but audible vocals add an air of hidden intelligence to this one,
whilst the crackhappy beat and sparkle flash melody draw you further
in. "Applied pressure" takes it to a hidden sub level,
with gentle wave like rolling adventured into the secret areas
of your brain. Listen to yourself as you wade through thick gloopy
lakes of glistening clarity and watch as small tear drop shapes,
flatten themselves on the translucent floor and float into the
sky like falling ash from a burning field.
Very mesmerizing stuff.
"Monty" is below subtle at the start, but ever so slowly
increases its message by adding syrupy plinks and echoing plonks
to the mixture. This is all tied and wrapped together with a beautifully
serene acoustic guitar which has your eyelashes dancing in their
small moist sockets. One for your tired monitor drained eyes,
and small sugar cube people that live inside your kitchen cupboards.
This new 7 inch release from Chin Chin is pretty cool. Im not
always a fan of vocals in 'electronic' music so "deafness
becomes me" and "monty" appeal to me more, and
they really manage to invade your thought processes with a blend
of special scores and reflecting memory bubbles which keep it
all in place. Good stuff.
