Second
review this month for clickclickdrone records. Paul davies
aka shirase delivers his first ep for clickclickdrone... bringing
together such diverse influences as miles davies and brian
eno, shirase's music is a colourful ride of layered melody,
drones and careful beat construction...
"A
pathetic act of random violence" opens with a low bubbling
texture field of metallic walls slowly vibrating against
each other to cause an almost glass slicing to be released
into the foray. A sub bassline, plods along like a drunken
hippo on the way to the karaoke bar, whilst a golden melody,
tinkles backwards and forwards on a fluorescent swing, accompanied
by oined bybig brother fuzz, who constantly warns of possible
dangers with a big, almost creaky voice. Smooth but cunning.
"All
I wanted to do was sleep" leaks from its container
and runs over the rubble strewn floor, collecting discarded
particles in its wake, and managing to unleash a mesmorising
tune into this dark dark place. This one brings a lot of
life with it, whilst "the smallest thing you can imagine"
casts a hypnotic trance of crunchy glitch and harrowing
calls, that forces you to walk in line towards the huge
glowing presence on the horizon. Pure atmopsherics, blended
with a quality drumbeat pushed into a cd form, for all to
enjoy. Love's it.The
robot sits in the shadows, spinning around uncontrollably
on the damp floor, whilst randomly casting out distress
beacons which fire into the sky like audio flares causing
huge portions of daylight to rip from their moorings and
causing them to crash to the ground, its "Romney hythe
and dymchurch" time. That little metal loon is causing
chaos. There is a underlying computerised mumbling to this
one, almost like a space station, which is warming up to
fire its lazer at a planet, commanded by tall man in a black
cloak... or something like that. "Inquiry after"
takes it down low, building up layer upon layer of atmospheric
rumblings until they all combine in a wind fuelled demonstration
on the edge of space, cool stuff.
"Nervous
fight capital" is rammed full of landscapes and stories,
that it cant help but get you thinking, its maybe a little
bit too minmal in places for my personal taste, but still
cool stuff. Its the quite person that always sits just out
of view, the machine that youve never really used, that
always manages to impress your face up and off when you
see what they can really do. More sweet stuff on clickclickdrone,
keep em coming.
