"Earlier this year, Skam invited entries to be considered for inclusion on a compilation. The brief was simple; Write a track based in some way around noises made by cats. The response was overwhelming. It took months to listen to all the entries and choose our favourite tracks, and after much consideration, this is what we came up with. The first 500 copies of this compilation will be packaged in a luxurious fake fur sleeve which can be stroked while listening to enhance the whole experience." Artists: Living Ornaments, Obsession 27, Amnesie, Celar Curve, Greenkingdom,, Rolex2$, Mira Calix, Scossa, Mr Mips, Rivas Gonzalez, e.stonji, Lady Atone, [Guyom], Automatofonic, Ed Macfarlane, Rusuden, Spinkle Stein, Yard, Ascalaphe".

I would grab one of these asap as they seem to be sold out on the SKAM shop, check Boomkat.com etc as they may have some in.

CD 1 : Rest.

Living Ornaments make another appearance on Tesselate after the "Klonten" release on Scarcelight, with their addition to the compilation, entitled"Kattenkwaad". This one is a warped cascade whirlwind of midnight cats, sitting on the fence at the back of the garden squawking away like a big fluffy marshmallow parrot. Luckily, his screeching loosens shards of wood from his lofty perch, which falls to the ground to create a clicky drumbeat that awakens a whole load of smily faced characters from the compost pile below, who join in with the melee and sing a super smooth happy melody that silences mr feline above. A parallax journey into a hidden world, love it.
"Qat" by Obsession 23 takes a more underworld look on things, with brooding factory releases, blended with staticy outbursts and plonking melodies which add a real air of evil to the track, its a sly one, whilst Amnesie give us "Fasterpussyfatcatpower", which turns out to be an ambient bombdive into a pulsating block of meows and eerie callings from supernatural samplers in the distance. Its a whole melting pot of audioness that ties itself together to form a chilling hacked message to all listeners.

Celar Curve used two cats called Lea/layer and I/rin for the sounds basis on this one, they sound like some weird ass cats. "Kephlar mask (frozen plural)" takes place inside a huge glass enclosure in the dead of night, as the harsh wind outside shakes your transparent cage causing unearthly whispers and mechanised insanity to reign within. This is a one way mission into the deranged mind of someone who is almost in the room, really atmospheric stuff. Greenkingdom aka Michael Cottone releases "New Purrspective" to your ears, and takes them on warm melodic trip into deepest furball land. Cat calls float high above like distorted seagull calls, whilst the delicate resonance of this one really infects your mind, and does not let go. Beautiful stuff.
[guyom] with his first of two tracks on this compilation is happy to let "Appelons un chat, un chat" sit on your lap and cover you in a carpet of hair that is impossible to remove, he just doesnt care. This one is a moody affair, almost like the ever growing presence of a unseen force which is gradually forming on the horizon, there is something out there. Haard to describe but inspiring and addictive at the same time, take a listen. Rolex 25's "Chevjya Niinron Jyin Nevach" hands you a tiny ball of insania which instantly soaks into your pours and floods around your veins like a rampant drug. If you can imagine a warped childrens toy, trying to sing you a happy song whilst waving a sharpened screwdriver all up in your face, this is it. Beware.

Mira Calix processes a tiny orchestra through a big filter, and spreads them on a thin layer of metal with a palette knife, it has to be "Pudditat". This one takes espionage to a new level, with bassy drumbeats and motorized thought processes all just that little bit too calm. Small but powerful. "Inflatable Carpet" by Scossa is a set of instructions that you were not meant to read, a secret message from a hidden world which doesnt want to be found. This place is rammed full of warm fuzzy crunch barrels which all roll in unison in this semi circular landscape, as other humanoids press massive red buttons on their heads which cause the world to turn inside out in the blink of an eye. Check it att.
Mr Mips used to his minidisc to its freakin maximum on "The greatest movie ever" sampling the world to make his contribution. Its small, its shaped like a battery and its laughing at you, yeh its stil laughing, that manic little maniac. The little droid thing continues to laugh, with his springy rewind voice burning itself into your greasy mind, as a revolving melody and back of head beatpattern all join in, trying to make you turn insane. That little bastaad.

CD 2 : Play

Rivas Gonzales starts off the second cd with "Help" and convinces you that its time go into orbit, before releasing a robots head full of chaos madness into the cockpit. Battling the manic squirl fest which is scattered with minature ringing bells made of diamond, you attempt to eject the toon, but in the end give up and learn to live with this freakin loony crap thing constantly in your personal space. This track is awesome. "Cats N Oggs" by E.Stonji takes a industrial rewind clonk look at things with sci-fi pockets of imagination and an infectious drumpattern that takes total control. This a battle between a pulse rifle and a bank of servers all a floating in space, wrapped in tomorrows technology, awesome stuff.
Lady Atone's "Chatone" lets the trouble makers from the bag and injects a hyper bubbling mixture of vocals, feline calls and a waterfall like turntable manic scratch session that revolves and spins itself into oblivion. Ear catching stuff. Whilst Rivas Gonzales with his second track on the Play cd takes it straight to the cats (robotic cats) mouth, with a bomb diving ramble into this crazy embassy of madness. This one is all about plasticine claws and pints of catnip. Watch yourself, its plodfunk 16 bit time. Mad track, well played Rivas. [guyom] drops his second outing "Reglement De Compte A Chat Chorale" which is free-for-all on the meow front, that is all you need to know.

Automatofonic let "Scroedingers cat" loose, and barrage you with scientific information from the top of a massive plastic box. The cat callings are mixed into the thick smoggy sky, and form into glass tablets of water which pelt dowm from above and crash into the earth releasing thudding drum strikes throughout the dirty landscape, before the electric sunshine makes it all better again. Refreshingly roboto style stuff. "Porno Mogs in Woods" is a dedication to Ed Mcfarlane's cat Jasper, he sounds like a hard maniac, and the track implies that throughout. This must be Jaspers personal soundtrack, as he patrols his neighbourhood with a thudding bassline and spooky character, that scares a lot of competitiors away. Ok Jas take it easy mate, we are all friends around here. Cool track.
Justin Morgan performing as his musical alias Rusuden, jumps onto the back of a massive monster thing and drops "Flickered like Flame' from his back pocket by accident, he is lucky SKAM found it. This one is a bulbous calculator trying to get past the bouncers into the scientific party which is being held in upmost secret. The bassline takes this one to another level, with a buzzing presence that melts perfectly with the guitar plucked melody and scattered vocals that float throughout. Almost bouncy happiness, but crafted superbly to make even the smallest processors party, quality track.

Spinkle Steins section in the cd leaflet is a whole load of numbers, which could be some kind of code, or a direct feed from the small machined mouth they/it/he/she talk from, you tell me. "Kitten escapes the laboratory" is a warped version of reality, hardwired into a 8bit console and spat out the other side as a opaque paste, which is spread onto the back of a tomato mouse and set loose into the 15bit world. Quality track on all the levels, lovings it big time.
Yard take the baton and blitz it bigtime with "Clearing", which is a fuzz fuelled barrage of epic proportions between two gargantuan machines, each swiping through the air and landing hits on each other, sending shards of imagination far into the distance. Ascalaphe then takes control with the bleepfest which is "Cat Time". This one builds up, gaining status from all sides, sucking audio from whatever possible outlet and mixes it all together with its rawkus internal whisk heart which is coated in cat brains. Go on, have a drink.

Scrubber Fox ends this whole cat party with "Felonic (catnip bong mix)". From the opening jingle the clouds split and a synthetic shine, beams down from the glowing red circle in the sky as a dominating crunch fest is unleashed from the brain of Mr Fox. Squeels and squawks manage to escape from this wall of madness as the volume of the marauding monster doubles in size to cover the whole goddamn place. I would run like crazy, as this is an uncontrollable force.
Shit hot stuff from Mr Fox.

Skam Cats is a damn fine release. The range of music selected makes the 2cd an excellent batch of music to listen to and keeps your head in check by flipping the cat craziness all over the show. I sure hope we hear a lot more from the artists on this one, as there is a whole load of talent out there. Congrats SKAM on the concept and selection, and to the artists for the output, top stuff.
